Asphalt and architectural shingles

Three-tab asphalt shingles are flat and economical. Architectural — sometimes called dimensional — shingles are thicker, layered, and read with more depth from the street. Architectural is what most Valley homeowners choose on a replacement, and it generally handles wind better.

We will bring samples and talk through color, because on a desert lot the shingle color has a real effect on how the roof looks in full sun.

What Arizona does to a shingle roof

• UV degradation dries out the asphalt binder and shortens shingle life
• Heat softens shingles, so careless foot traffic scuffs granules off
• Granule loss exposes the mat and accelerates failure
• Thermal cycling loosens fasteners and lifts edges over time
• Monsoon wind catches lifted edges and tears shingles free
• Blowing dust and debris collect in valleys and slow drainage

Installation details that decide the outcome

Attic ventilation is not optional here. A roof that cannot breathe cooks the shingles from underneath and takes years off the system. Starter courses, proper nailing patterns, ice-and-water style protection in valleys, and correct flashing at every wall and penetration are the rest of the job.

Anyone can lay shingles. The difference shows up in year eight.

Replacement and re-roofing

We tear off, inspect and repair the deck, install new underlayment and flashing, and lay the new roof. On homes where the existing roof is already at multiple layers, tear-off is the only responsible option.
